Before Damon and Affleck became super famous, these two former Massachusetts neighbors not only starred in the film, they also wrote the Oscar winning screenplay. Gus Van Sant got an Oscar nom for best director, Robin Williams won the Oscar for best supporting actor, Matt Damon was nominated for best actor, and Minnie Driver was Oscar nominated for best supporting actress. I saw this film when it first came out, but you know the best thing was that I had forgotten the whole thing, so the best prize for me was to be able to experience this very fine film once again. I am shocked to see that Damon’s next film was Saving Private Ryan. These two films launched Damon’s career.

Strong characterization is present throughout this tale of an overlooked math genius with behavioural problems discovered by a star professor while having legal problems, and assigned to an unorthodox therapist. Each character in different ways is fleshed out and given depth in ways that contribute so well to the film itself.

I enjoyed this and found it very well-written overall. Will's explanation of his ability to Skylar is exactly right. Elliott Smith's bittersweet "Miss Misery" at the closing credits was perfectly suited.

An interesting side note: just before I saw this movie, I read Tracy Kidder's "The Soul of a New Machine" which followed Data General Corporation's development of a 32-bit minicomputer to compete with DEC. At one point one of the engineers comments that his dream occupation would be hanging around a university solving other peoples math problems ... which is exactly what Will Hunting is doing in this movie.

A really good movie with a message to always seek our fullest potential.

Filled with foul language and behaviors so definitely not for children.

At times it was emotional not only because of the material but the fact that the amazing actor that Robin Williams was will never grace the big screen again. Rest in peace, Robin. You truly were an incredibly talented guy. There will never be another one like you!

RIP Robin Williams

Aug 11, 2014

This review is both an appreciation of and a sad farewell to actor and comic Robin Williams, who has died today, reportedly a probable suicide, after years of struggle with depression and substance abuse.
Probably my favorite of Mr. Williams's many fine and memorable performances-- and perhaps for him one of the most self-revealing as well-- is the role of therapist Sean Maguire, who helps a troubled young man named Will Hunting, played by Matt Damon. Will is an MIT janitor who it turns out is really a math genius.
The role of Dr. Maguire won Williams the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1998, and I still recall his hilarious Groucho-like slouch to the podium to accept his award and his exuberance as he thanked the film's young screenwriters, Damon and co-star Ben Affleck ("Guys, I still want to see some ID...")
In the years since its release some critics began calling "Good Will Hunting," which also won the Oscar for Damon and Affleck for Original Screenplay, over-praised. I disagree. Damon is affecting as the angry, wounded Will, bedeviled by childhood demons. His tentative romance with Skylar, a bright, privileged and tender college student played by Minnie Driver, is touching. Ben Affleck lends fine support as Will's best friend Chuckie, who urges his friend to embrace his gift and share it with the world, even as he reconciles himself to the knowledge that his own life will likely stay in the old Boston neighborhood of their working-class boyhoods.
Robin Williams plumbed new dramatic depths as Sean, who is haunted by the death of his wife. As he bonds with Will, and struggles to help him reclaim his life and move forward, he is in turn challenged by the combative youth to do the same.
RIP, Robin. Whatever your own demons, your gifts were a life force, and you were and are beloved by so many. You will be missed, always.

One of the all time great movies! Vincent Lombardo's comment below is more indicative of severely limited life experience: nasty neighborhoods do exist, and the part Matt Damon plays beautifully illustrates what occurs, and having met a super-genius in 3rd grade, they most definitely do exist and it is a humbling experience to come in contact with them.
