Item Details

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

I got this to listen to on a long car trip, but I quickly turned it off because the lady was so annoying, it is better to read the book.

The story is fast paced with an interesting premise though not entirely unique (See Mary Renault's great "The Bull from the Sea" and "The King Must Die"). Although the heroine (Katniss) of the story is supposed to be a great hunter, it is pretty obvious that the author has never been hunting and is only imagining how to hunt. On the other hand author is on solid ground with the scenes where the contestants are prepared, dressed, paraded, interviewed, and paraded again. These scenes are vividly sketched and clearly based on Miss X contests.

This is a really good story to listen to but people who can't hear about death should not listen to this.
It also has a lot of detail.
Recommended listen to!

Great story. If I'd have been turning pages I've have called it a page turner. Well produced too.

The setting is more than a little abysmal when you think about it, but following Katniss, who is literally both human prey and predator, was incredibly suspenseful and captivating. I kept thinking, “What would I do if I were in the arena?” (I wouldn’t last long.) I also had fun trying to map this post-apocalyptic North America to its roots in our current American geography and culture. Carolyn McCormick does a nice job narrating, but in my opinion her voice and tone is just a touch too mature for Katniss. Still, she does a great job bringing the characters to life.

excelent! better than reading the book

Interesting audio cd and some violence included.

Basicly a teenager Katniss's talents are put to the test when she voluntarily takes her younger sister's place.

The story is quite interesting and captivating. It kept me intrigued, but I was a bit disappointed with the attack of the mutts. Sorry, it was just too unbelievable and distracted from a pretty good story.

I was very intrigued with the mind games that are continually going on. The psycho warfare and intrigue really makes the story.

The narration is excellent and well done.

I loved the book, and thought the audiobook would be something nice to try and knit to. Based on this audiobook experience I think I will stick to watching tv while I knit. While it wasn't a terrible experience, there are many parts that I found buggy - words are skipped or repeated or half skipped and repeated. Very frustrating to listen to!
