This is an AMAZING book that people of all ages (past the age of 12- it is rather intense) can enjoy. Each book in the trilogy (this is the first book) is better than the last one, as each book utilizes information from the previous one and expands upon it in an eloquently written and exciting way. I recommend this book highly!

This book was amazing but, THEY KILLED MANCHEE!! that was horrible man.

The unique part of the book is that you can feel Todd's experiences weighing on him and feel him learn from them, this is one of the best books I have read!

Book One of what is arguably the best YA series I've ever read. As a teacher and as a lover of good books, I can't recommend it highly enough.

I really enjoyed this book. It's one of those books that don't quite pull you in at the beginning and then after a chapter or so you begin to enjoy it. Or at least it was for me. It kind of reminded me just a little of maze runner. The difference is that I really liked this book and maze runner wasn't my favorite. I suggest that everyone give it a try! Just the first few chapters. I promise you'll end up enjoying it.

Overall I enjoyed this book. It had a good pace and I wanted to keep reading to know what happened next. If you have a chance to get ahold of Patrick Ness' short story, New World, it is a nice lead in to the book, though it isn't immediately evident how the stories are connected. My only complaint is that the ending was a cliffhanger, but that just made me want to read the next book, so perhaps it worked?

mvkramer, epic fantasy/scifi is nothing like this. it has nothing to do with it. why do you say novels should aspire to be like this? in my opinion, this book was okay. nothing special. kind of boring. how do you like that?

This series is what every epic fantasy/scifi series should aspire to be -- drama without angst; love without sappy "romance" -- and the ending is perfect! The books become a very sophisticated reflection on violence, fear, prejudice, and the human tendency to do evil. If you love riveting stories with a lot of meat, for heaven's sake read this series.

Todd lives in a town where there are no women, and men hear each other's thoughts all the time. As far as Todd can remember, it's just the way things are. One day, though, Todd finds someone in the forest -- a girl. More incredible, the girl has come from space; the advance scout from a colony ship. And, most incredibly, Todd can't hear her thoughts at all. When the men from Todd's town learn about the girl, terrible secrets are revealed -- and they have to run for their lives through a world larger and more dangerous than Todd ever imagined.
