Join us for a conversation with Kathleen Stone about They Called Us Girls: Stories of Female Ambition from Suffrage to Mad Men (Cynren Press, 2022), which is collection of biographical portraits of women who had professional careers in the mid-20th century, an era when women were expected to stay home. But these women defied conventional expectations and had "men's" jobs in law, medicine, science, and other fields. Based on personal interviews and historical research, Kathleen unlocks the secrets of their ambitions. 

Following this discussion with Tiziana Dearing, host of Radio Boston on WBUR, there will be time for audience Q&A, and the program will conclude with an author signing facilitated by independent bookstore partner Trident Booksellers & Cafe.

About the author

Kathleen Stone knows something about female ambition. As a lawyer, she was a law clerk to a federal judge, a litigation partner in a law firm, and senior counsel at a financial institution. She also taught seminars on American law in six foreign countries, including as a Fulbright Senior Specialist. Her work has appeared in Ploughshares Blog, Arts Fuse, Los Angeles Review of Books, Timberline Review, and The Writer's Chronicle. Tiziana Dearing is the host of Radio Boston on WBUR. She’s been a commentator and contributor to WBUR for more than a decade, and has contributed to a number of other regional and national news outlets. Prior to joining the Radio Boston team, Tiziana was a professor at Boston College in the School of Social Work, where she taught social innovation and leadership. A longtime anti-poverty advocate, Tiziana also ran Boston Rising, a startup antipoverty fund to end generational poverty in Boston, and was the first woman president of Catholic Charities for the Archdiocese of Boston.
