Author Talk: Ellen Clegg and Dan Kennedy - What Works in Community News: Media Startups, News Deserts, and the Future of the Fourth Estate

6:00 PM – 7:45 PM
West Roxbury

Description

Local news is essential to democracy. Meaningful participation in civic life is impossible without it. However, local news is in crisis. According to one widely cited study, some 2,500 newspapers have closed over the last generation.

Veteran journalists Ellen Clegg and Dan Kennedy cut through the pessimism surrounding this issue. In their new book, What Works in Community News, they discuss the new innovative journalism models that are popping up across the country.

Ellen Clegg worked for many years for the Boston Globe. She spent most of her career at the paper as senior editor in the newsroom and then moved to the opinion pages in 2014.

Dan Kennedy is a professor of journalism at Northeastern University. In his professional career, he has written for a variety of publications including the Guardian and the Washington Post.
