Join us in partnership with The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company for an in-person talk on the origins of A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens with Professor Natalie McKnight.
The lecture will be followed by an audience Q&A.
Charles Dickens stayed in Boston in 1842 at the start of his first tour of America and then again in 1867-68 to begin and end his American reading tour. Dickens Scholar and the Dramaturg for Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s dazzling new production of Charles Dickens’ ‘ A Christmas Carol’ describes how Boston, and the city of Lowell, which he also visited, shaped the iconic story of Scrooge and his redemption.
Natalie McKnight is Professor of Humanities and Dean of the College of General Studies at Boston University. She has published several books on Victorian fiction and numerous articles on Charles Dickens. She has a BA in English and Drama (Washington College), an MA in creative writing (Johns Hopkins), and a PhD in English and American Literature from University of Delaware, and she is co-editor of DICKENS STUDIES ANNUAL.
