Very good book, but very difficult to get through. I'm a pretty fast reader, and I found myself going back two or three times over a paragraph or passage because I got lost. Virginia Woolf writes in a very stream-of-consciousness way, and…

For a "challenge" book club...challenge because most members read it decades ago and disliked it. Now I went from dislike it less to like it more but still not close to loving it.

Dreadful. I enjoy reading Woolf's non-fiction, her journals, essays, criticism. She was an astute observer with a wicked wit and a tremendous gift for nature writing as well as travel memoirs. Why then are her so novels so wretched?

Can't decide if I like this or not. A disjointed story that seemed to start off slowly before fizzling out altogether, left me somewhat exasperated and looking for more closure at ending. However, the masterful, polished and seemingly…

I read this book for the 52 books in 52 weeks reading challenge. I used the summer mini challenge prompt read a book set at a beach. This book is quite different. It is meant to show the inner conflicts of a family. It is sad and at times…

To fully enjoy this book, I suppose one might need to have been, at some point in life, exposed to a regal character, a “Queen Bee” the likes of Mrs. Ramsay, the sun around which everything and everybody here orbits. And yet, it’s often…

i read woolf now, as I do so many other exquisite writers, to hear her narrative voice. Like hearing from an old friend. What they say is good to hear, but hearing their unique voice is what really matters it seems now.

None of the smart-aleckly stage tricks of Joyce, but with an equally deep feeling for what life is about: father and son, husband and wife, memory, and time passing out of our sensations of earthly life. Remarkable

To get the full flavor of this novel, I read it twice. It was worth it. The insights into the characters, the peeks into their private thoughts, the intriguing relationships between them and the way Woolf keeps the reader interested in one…

Not my favorite of Woolf's work, but undeniably important as a literary text. Worth reading if you're a fan of Woolf, but this novel is not for the faint of heart or lover of traditional narratives.

Thank you M. Cook [below] for your excellent analysis of this book. True wit is nature to advantage dressed.....i was compelled to slog through it for book club. The characters are shallow, i would not have tea with them let alone spend a…

A moron, an imbecile, and an idiot met and discussed To The Lighthouse, praising it for its beauty, masterly use of volume, emotional swings...the book is tiresome to read and I had to make myself finish it; the conclusion is as…

Absolutely beautifully written and philosophically driven. Lacks the combination of prose and description to paint a picture in the reader's mind, but certainly a thinking novel.

With unmistakable genius the fluid and gorgeous prose carries you completely into this book. The reader becomes a spirit flitting between the minds of the novel's characters. it's about beauty, about the unpreventable tragedy of time…

A beautiful study not just of family dynamics in a changing society, but also of the deep shifts in writing and narration happening in the novel. TO THE LIGHTHOUSE is one of the first to actively explore shifting perspectives, partially…

Considered one of the Top 10 classic novels (my #10) of the western world. This novel centres on the tensions within a family during a vacation. The novel was written in 1927 between two of her other popular novels, Mrs. Dalloway and…

The use of stream-of-consciousness narrative and nonlinear plot makes this book difficult to follow for those like me used to a formal structure of chronological time.
