At the risk of sounding like I'm telling you which of my children I love more, I think this is my favorite book of all time. It has all the elements described in the (rather dry) summary, but it is so much more than that. There are layers upon layers to this story: Politics, environmental concerns, murder, multiple love stories. At its center it is a coming-of-age story about a young girl who knows every single thing about her life before she's even lived it, because she is a genetic replica, and moreover a science experiment. I love the characters, I love the pacing and the characterization, and I love that every time I read it (7x and counting) I understand something new. Highly recommend.

C.J. Cherryh is a great author whose work is often hard to find. This novel is extremely complex but well worth the read. The story centers around the genetic replicate of a brilliant genetisist who struggles to live up to her predecessors reputation and fight against her darker urges while trying to survive in a highly political scientific community where all motives are suspect and few can be trusted.
