"David Sedaris's ability to transform the mortification of everyday life into wildly entertaining art," (The Christian Science Monitor) is elevated to wilder and more entertaining heights than ever in this remarkable new book.
Trying to make coffee when the water is shut off, David considers using the water in a vase of flowers and his chain of associations takes him from the French countryside to a hilariously uncomfortable memory of buying drugs in a mobile home in rural North Carolina . In essay after essay, Sedaris proceeds from bizarre conundrums of daily life-having a lozenge fall from your mouth into the lap of a fellow passenger on a plane or armoring the windows with LP covers to protect the house from neurotic songbirds-to the most deeply resonant human truths. Culminating in a brilliant account of his venture to Tokyo in order to quit smoking, David Sedaris's sixth essay collection is a new masterpiece of comic writing from "a writer worth treasuring" (Seattle Times).
Praise for When You Are Engulfed in Flames:
"Older, wiser, smarter and meaner, Sedaris...defies the odds once again by delivering an intelligent take on the banalities of an absurd life." —Kirkus Reviews
This latest collection proves that not only does Sedaris still have it, but he's also getting better....Sedaris's best stuff will still—after all this time—move, surprise, and entertain." —Booklist

As usual, Sedaris delivers a hilarious collection of memoirs. Read the one called ''In the Waiting Room' and see what happens when he gives up trying to learn French while living in Paris and to just reply 'D'accord' to every question...

Insightful and fun – not as *funny* as some of his books but I still found it pretty hilarious.

This is a series of very dry, funny anecdotes. Sedaris starts on one topic, but then blindsides you with something only marginally related to the original story. It feels fresh, with a touch of that Kurt Vonnegut charm on the side.

This isn't my favorite Sedaris book, but his witty humor always makes me laugh. This audiobook was good company on a very long flight across the Pacific.

Seriously funny! Brilliant comedy act.

The book began with a very graphic description of a woman who was full of worms. The author then described a time when his pubic hair was full of lice.
That was enough for me. What a horrible book.

Took it on my drive to Montreal. Had a driveway moment when I arrived.
My friends thought I was crying in my car... I was laughing!

"Sometimes the sins you haven't committed are all you have to hold on to. If you're really desperate, you might need to grope, saying, for example, 'I've never killed anyone with a hammer' or 'I've never stolen from anyone who didn't deserve it.'"
