This was the first Margaret Atwood book I have read. Personally I did not like it. The story was jarring in rhythm and was complicated to follow. I couldn't really bond with the character or emphasize with her. I really didn't enjoy it.
Atwood’s early fiction seems to often be about people who are intensely uncomfortable, and it’s tough to spend time with them. From now on I’m going to try to stick to Atwood’s invigorating speculative fiction.
It was an interesting start to this novel, however I did not connect well to the main character or any of them, come to think about it. It was a quick read about a young woman who just had a mastectomy and how she is coping with relationship with men. While she runs away to find herself, she stumbles on to a Caribbean island where things are not always what they seem. Local politics get hot and she seems to be in the "stink" of it all.
