The main character Blue can be quite an infuriating character to read with his naivety. You would expect a guy that age that has lived in the West so long to have more sense.

E.L. Doctrow, best known for "Ragtime" and "Billy Bathgate," kicked off his career with a bleak, violent Western set in a small frontier town. It's quite a bit different than his other books and while not as good as his later work, it is an interesting take on the genre that has some similarities with Cormac McCarhty, although written in a much more lucid and straightforward style.

I have read "Ragtime", "The Book of Daniel", "Sweet Land Stories". All three were better than "Welcome to Hard Times". The writing in this book was very unclear and confusing at times (maybe it's just me?)
