The Bismarck was the fabled German battleship of World War II. Traces the "life" of the Bismarck from its launching (courtesy of newsreel footage) through its many battles and narrow escapes, concluding with its far-from-inevitable sinking in the Spring of 1941. The story concentrates on the human element, specifically a British intelligence captain, who has lost his family in the London blitz and thus has a personal reason for seeing the Bismarck blasted from the sea. The captain's tireless efforts are abetted by the love and support of a female naval officer.

The stark news at the beginning of the film was that Great Britain was the only viable European force left to fight the Germans in WWII. And then the stark news got worse in that Germany had just launched the greatest destroyer ship ever, the Bismark. Oh, and then it gets even worse when the Bismark and German ships succeed in sinking the second largest destroyer in the world, a British ship named Hood. If the Bismark is able to disappear and make repairs, it will be able to return to action and destroy the British fleet making Germany the supreme naval force.

excellent movie >> behind the scenes version of a great story from WWII. Watched it a few times over the years since childhood on TV and always enjoy it. A bit stiff upper lipped style British war film but I love the behind the scenes strategy of naval battles . Good show old chap !!

This is a really good movie....and I actually saw it at the movies (Utopia Theater, Queens,NY).

Only disappointment back then was that the money does not have a version of the hit song "Sink the Bismarck!" by Johnny Horton as its theme.

Johnny Horton also well known for another "movie theme"/hit song "North to Alaska. That movie starred John Wayne.

Horton also sang the #1 hit: "The Battle of New Orleans"(1959).
