Re-released to coincide with Abbott?s newest novel, Dare Me A young woman hired to keep the books at a down-at-the-heels nightclub is taken under the wing of the infamous Gloria Denton, a mob luminary who reigned during the Golden Era of Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano. Notoriously cunning and ruthless, Gloria shows her eager young prot?g?e the ropes, ushering her into a glittering demimonde of late-night casinos, racetracks, betting parlors, inside heists, and big, big money. Suddenly, the world is at her feet--as long as she doesn't take any chances, like falling for the wrong guy. As the roulette wheel turns, both mentor and prot?g?e scramble to stay one step ahead of their bosses and each other.

I like to read the occasional noir crime story and this was a lucky pick from the library. This was a quick weekend read and good entertainment.

I'm not sure this quite lives up to Abbott's previous feminist noir thrillers, but the beautiful language and dark, decaying elegance of her setting is still there. Worth a read, but not her best work.

I’ve been striking out lately, but Megan Abbott’s Queenpin was a flicker at the end of a dark tunnel. Set in mid-century somewheresville, Queenpin is populated with diamond heists, race tracks, roulette wheels, and gin martinis. Mob legend Gloria Denton is grooming a young ingenue for the seedy criminal underworld, but things turn awry when the protégée narrator falls for a freewheeling gambling man named Vic. The two leading ladies are strong and unrepentant, and Abbott’s spare, tight wordplay is refreshing. I’m desperately curious about her follow up novel starring — wait for it — high school cheerleaders!

A stylish, sexy, slinky noir thriller set in an unnamed town in the 1950s, Megan Abbott introduces us to an impressionable young accounting student who falls under the influence of aging but still glamorous mob moll who introduces her to a life of crime. The young protege falls for the wrong guy, of course (this IS a noir story, after all, there HAS to be a wrong guy,) and the two start to scheme against the queenpin. A triangle of deceit and betrayal begins.

QUEENPIN in a small volume, and there's not an ounce of fat or a word wasted in the entire novel. Great for those who loved Gillian Flynn (GONE GIRL) or the novels of Raymond Chandler or Mickey Spillane.
