love this series
Holy jeez! We once again get dropped in the world of Westeros in perhaps the darkest season yet! This epic season of Game of Thrones was powerful and intense with incredible acting, story, script, action, cinematography, soundtrack and plot. However, I don't think it quite supposed the sheer quality of season 4, it came pretty close! We have the most epic Jon Snow story line yet, a awesome battle involving the White Walkers, the best Daenarys story line since season 1 and a lot of advances in the plot! Like always, every episode in this season was just amazing, full to the brim with treachery, betrayers, battle, bastards and incest, and plot twists. Every scene was of importance. The writing quality as usual was perfection. The cast as usual was perfection. The directing was impeccable (especially by Miguel Sapochnik!!). Thrones keeps on surprising us with it's quality and will continue to surprise us with it's UNBEATABLE quality. I cannot express how much this show has impacted me. My mind has once again been blown and I am truly at a loss for words. You are in for a real treat! Season 5 is arguably the most controversial season to date. The Dorne story line was a flaw (Literally the only one in GoT, right??) and the Sansa rape scene pissed many off. However, this doesn't take away from the overall quality which will just blow you away! In overall terms, it is one of the strongest season to date.
Performances are, as usual, superb. Stunning, just absolutely stunning! Bloody action and extreme power plays return full throttle, as Game of Thrones enjoys a new-found liberation from the world of the source material, resulting in more unexpected thrills. When you play a game of thrones, you win or you die, there is no middle ground. If you haven't yet seen this series, don't hesitate. Don't think. Just do it. It's seriously compelling and you'll shortly find out why the world has gone mad for Martin.
Five stars for the series and especially Season 5 which is only surpassed by Season 6. But the DVDs are terrible. There are three tiers of menus on the DVD set and they don't work very well. I find the DVDs skip quite a bit and they are not scratched. They look virtually new. Also, there's a significant part of Season 5 spoken in the fake Dothraki language, but there are no subtitles for this. If you want the subtitles, i.e. translations, you have to put subtitles on for EVERYTHING. So then you're stuck with subtitles for all the English parts too. I don't know who thought that up, but it's ridiculous. In the digital copies I have the Dothraki parts are subtitled on the screen, low on the screen too so it doesn't interfere with the film. Do yourself a favor and splurge for the digital copies. The DVDs are a waste of money and time.
I started watching after five seasons of hype related to this show and was immediately hooked. The first season blew my mind so much that I decided to read the books. The first book turned out to be even more amazing so I decided to read the next two before watching seasons two through four, which coincides with the end of the third book, A Storm of Swords.
A Storm of Swords is better than any movie or TV show I have ever watched! I couldn't believe that the written medium could be so captivating without audio-visual elements! I decided to watch season 5 before the next book, believing that I could double my pleasure since the books cover more story in greater detail than the show... That was a big mistake!
Season 5 turned out to cover the next two books, with the overall story undoing almost every exciting thing that I held dear from reading a Storm of Swords! I cannot understand why George R. R. Martin would do this! The story changes so much that it should have been a new series! Extremely disappointing, even with prior knowledge of the series' tendency for shocking surprises. This season (5) is great, and comparable to the previous ones, but it just seems to flow from exciting surprise to potentially exciting surprise instead of telling one enthralling story like the previous instalments. I've read that books four and five don't each cover all the characters so this could be why this season feels a bit more rushed/condensed.
A Storm of Swords made a personal connection with me beyond the pages, with the major events delivered with a seemingly fan-serving flair not even the best movies could muster, yet the author ripped that to shreds for unsatisfying, gratuitous surprises that almost break the fourth wall. This season makes me wonder if he is going all out for allegory where previously, these stories were mostly fantasy to me.
It has now become harder to excuse the graphic content in these stories, especially considering the ages of the protagonists. This is further exacerbated by the popularity of the show in a world where society has lost its regard for the purpose of censorship in protecting the young, sensitive and even just the general conscience from accepting such a depraved universe in our real, normal world.
That this show will now be aired on network television is proof of our callousness as a generation. Some lessons and rules are meant to be eternal. We are meant to pass on certain restraints to our successors in this mortal coil so that they might not repeat our mistakes. Being "freely" vulgar and unfiltered is not what freedom of speech/expression was meant to defend. Such freedoms are defined by the boundaries we set for ourselves.
I love this series and will read books 4 onward before the TV show because it is an awesome work of art. I will also recognise that this material deserves some social restraint and will enjoy it as responsibly as I can.
I think this show should be taken off the air pure filth. no wonder we have so much violence in the world today because of filthy disgusting shows like this one. Please people stop supporting these BullShit shows like this one.
That this series is rated 9.5/10 by almost a million people on IMDb as of this writing speaks for itself. It is like no other. Extraordinary on so many levels. Cersei's "atonement" was deserving and just, but too lenient... (she's EVIL) And Jon Snow...!!! Not sure if I can wait a year for the library to get Season 6!!! Arrrrgh!!! FIVE STARS.
Season 5 barely gets a 4-star rating from me.... hard to believe since I have given all previous seasons 5 star ratings. There is something definitely missing in this season and it's not just the obvious absence of recently deceased characters (and not one storyline pertaining to Brann and Rickon Stark). Maybe HBO should stop killing off their main characters in this usually well adapted epic series.
This season wasn't as good as the previous season. It was just ok.
