Marking the first time that John Coltrane recorded nothing but his own original works, the album is filled with powerful notes, emotion, and expressive sounds. The album includes such classics as Nina; Countdown; and Syeeda's Song Flute.

I recently borrowed the Ken Burns miniseries on Jazz. Have only seen episodes 9 & 10 (contemporary jazz) and thought I should borrow some CDs. The only jazz CD I own is John Coltrane’s Ole (a favorite!) So, I’m starting with more Coltrane – his masterpiece A Love Supreme and Blue Train, today I’m listening to Giant Steps (excellent). I think with Jazz you have find the music that appeals to you, moves you, excites / inspires you. So, I’m moving on to Miles Davis Kind of Blue – something new for me. If you’re not sure where to start on your jazz appreciation, you may want to borrow some of the Burns’ Jazz miniseies DVDs – gives a good introduction to the music and showcases various artists. I enjoyed the fact that he included current musicians such as Wynton Marsalis explaining why certain artists / albums influenced him.

Fantastic music all around, and totally essential jazz listening. Easy on the ears and the soul. Paul Chambers lays down some real fine bass work too. ;)

One of the best of Coltrane, and more "accessible" than most of his later offerings. A good place to start if you are new to Coltrane.
