The Three Musketeers is the most famous of Alexandre Dumas's historical novels and one of the most popular adventure stories ever written. Now in a bracing new translation, this swashbuckling epic chronicles the adventures of d'Artagnan, a brash young man from the countryside who journeys to Paris in 1625 hoping to become a musketeer and guard to King Louis XIII. Before long he finds treachery and court intrigue-and also three boon companions: the daring swordsmen Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Together they strive heroically to defend the honor of their queen against the powerful Cardinal Richelieu and the seductive spy Milady.

The title of this novel is used constantly today to refer to three best friends, so it's only a given that it should be included on this list.

"I am at the age of wild hopes, Monseigneur," said d'Artagnan.

Wow! the book is outstanding. I am sorry to say that the most recent movie with Logan lerman as dartagnan has completely butchered the book. this book has plenty of suspense and heroism to make it a true classic. You really just can't find good and true historical fiction these days anymore. Most of the stuff that's written nowadays is just about who falls in love with who and the nasty stuff that follows. I wish someone would actually write some good historical fiction that was NOT soaked in the "Overly romantic and lovey dovey romance " stuff.

The first modern swashbuckler and still the best! especially in the Richard Pevear translation.

Would've preferred to read it in French. Excellent ribald humor.
This is the first of four novels leading to "The Man In the Iron Mask".
