Fidlelma has determined to leave the religious life to focus on her passion for the law. Eadulf isn't happy with this, but is pleased that she wants him along when they are asked to solve a strange murder at a monastery. Before they arrive, they are attacked; at the monastery, strife is evident in the relationship between the abbot, an old friend of Fildelma's, and the Steward, who wants to bring in Roman ways, and to build in stone a monument that will stand for the ages. The mother of the murdered man is paying for the "improvements," but even she could do nothing with her son. The abbot seems to abdicate his responsibility to the steward, and men are hostile to Fidelma and Eadulf. Many are hostile to their questions; accidents keep happening, until finally the master builder is murdered. This crisis gives Fidelma a clue, as does the burning of a major library at another abbey and the murder of its librarian. Who benefits by destroying books? This question leads to the culprit, and a lesson in tolerance, for Fidelma's day, and ours.
