Punpun Punyama lives in a dysfunctional household. His parents fight, his uncle is unusual and unemployed, and Punpun himself can't do anything about it because not only is he a young boy, he is one at a very awkward age. Despite the circumstances, Punpun is an average child; he has big dreams, goes to school, and has a crush on a girl. The way his is story is told though is anything but average. Goodnight Punpun is the story of Punpun. We see the world through his perspective, we follow his life and those that are relevant to him, and yet, surprisingly, we never "hear" him speak. His words and thoughts are indirectly told to us either through the art, or by means of the narrator. This is one of the ways in which Asano portrays Punpun's awkwardness and distance. The other, and by far more noticeable way though, is in how this boy is depicted. The creator's illustrations have a photorealistic degree of detail to them; every little line is cleanly inked, and the screentones really amp up the weirder and more beautiful aspects of this series. Punpun on the other hand is a childlike outline of a bird-like creature. His dysfunctional family is the same. This is how Punpun views the world (he is an alien removed from it), and, it is how he copes with it (the ugliness of his parents is PG rated). The tone of the story reflects this distance. We don't feel tense, or sad, or angry despite the things that this child goes through. We do rejoice in the small accomplishments which feel like massive ones to a child. Mostly, we feel uncomfortable. Many of the characters are drawn with exaggerated facial expressions and body movements to show us how seemingly normal acts can look strange to another and make them uneasy. Looking through such a lens gives us plenty to think about. This series with its reflective quality, mature topics, and fairly explicit art is for an older audience. Between the superbly written narration and dialogue, and the outstanding art, Asano manages to put us in the shoes of the awkward Punpun. His life is full of both the anxieties and pleasures of youth, so it will be interesting to see how his perspective of the world and himself changes as he grows.

"Stand by Me" meets puberty angst.

"Goodnight PunPun" vol 1. is a stellar exploration into the impermanence of adolescence and the infinite yet naive psyche of a child. Great narrative alongside surreal elements parallel an ultra realistically drawn world, Inio Asano has created a microcosm of creativity that manages to be both immature and heartfelt, lewd and innocent. Honestly, I haven't been this drawn into a manga since reading Osamu Tezuka's "Buddha".

It's a great read even for those who generally don't read graphic novels.
