I am having a home birth within in a month. I found this book very helpful and encouraging in understanding my body's natural process and I am very excited and feel ready to go. This book was very insightful on where childbirth has been through the ages and where it is going. I also checked out the documentary on Netflix and it was also educational.

I didn't find this book "anti-hospital" as poatlee states. Instead, I found this book to be truthful about what it is really like to give birth in a hospital. Having birthed 2 children in hospitals on each coast of Canada I can attest to what happens and how for the most part the focus is not on the birthing mother but on the baby about to be born.....almost as if the birthing mother is not even in the room. Although this book provides only US based stats, the mark isn't very far for Canada. I highly suggest every pregnant woman, in fact every woman, read this book. Educating yourself is key in having the best birth for you and this book will help you achieve that.

I thought this book was too anti-hospital births. Though it tries to give a sense of bein unbiased, its not. So if you are the hospital birthing type (like I am!) would recommend that you not read this book, because it potrays a very negative images of hospitals and doctors.

Very real and balanced. Not fanatical on either extreme.

A valuable resource, especially for first-time parents. However, for after first-time parents who had a hospital birth, it may be a valuable read, also. I recommend reading this book to anyone who is about to become are already is pregnant.
