In this poem sent to William Lloyd Garrison, Mary Carpenter says goodbye to Garrison as he leaves England. Carpenter writes, "Thou champion of the suffering and oppressed; Lonely thou standest on the crowded deck." She encourages Garrison to keep fighting to end slavery and tells him to "let your faith be as the mustard seed; Send deep your roots into the hearts of men."
