"An abomination, long thought buried, has resurfaced in a war-torn land. But now it wears an American flag. Faced with another nightmare reborn, Captain America will not stand for more death at the hands of a ghost from his past. Haunted by his greatest shame, Thor must renew the hunt for a familiar beast. At their side, an assemblage of allies united to end the threats no one of them could face alone. They are soldiers. Warriors. Comrades-in-arms. Mighty heroes led by a living legend, stronger together than apart. They are the Avengers"--

My one complaint is a trivial one: Rogers' argument that the Avengers taught the original Wolverine how to stand for something. Charles Xavier of the X-Men and James and Heather Hudson of the original Alpha Flight would have an argument with that. Possibly others before those three as well.

That aside, it's a good if nastier than normal Avengers story. But this is Warren Ellis at work here...

This story has stylish and entertaining art, and the germ of a truly intriguing idea- but the story suffers from too much compression and narrative exposition. The story wasn't given room to breathe. Ellis makes a valiant effort to help the story bloom in the very small pot that it was given, but never really manages to achieve it. This is worth a read, but doesn't quite achieve its promise.

A decent one-shot story, suffers the common Avengers title problem of too many characters with too little to do.

A good standalone graphic novel by Ellis and McKone on Earth's mightiest heroes, this tale follows them as they confront a legacy of the past. Ellis has a good take on the characters, for the most part, and McKone's art is exceptional.

A very interesting take on Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Definitely worth a read.

I have never been that big of a fan of the Avengers but the writing in this GN is great. I especially like how they wrote up the interaction with Ironman and Hawkeye!
