[Joshua Bates] writes to his niece, Maria Weston [Chapman] in regards to giving the family and friends their regards. He is sorry to hear that Mr. B's sister "has been throw on the world but what can be made of her. Mrs B is pretty shrewd in such matters and thinks it is difficult to do any thing but I do things even when they do not promise immediate good." He says that if Maria believes it will do any good than she should advance her some money from his account but do so secretly because he has a "sort of dread of having it known that I give money to any body." His daughter Elizabeth improves on the piano.
