It's been two years since Peter Nimble and Sir Tode rescued the kingdom of HazelPort. In that time, they have traveled far and wide in search of adventure. Now they have been summoned by Professor Cake for a new mission: To find a twelve-year-old bookmender named Sophie Quire. Sophie knows little beyond the four walls of her father's bookshop, where she repairs old books and dreams of escaping the confines of her dull life. But when a strange boy and his talking cat/horse companion show up with a rare and mysterious book, she finds herself pulled into an adventure beyond anything she has ever read.

Such an enjoyable read. Beautifully paced, interesting characters and a good story - about stories. I haven't read the preceding books but I will now make sure to do so.
The importance of story in every person's life is so well brought out in this tale. I highly recommend it for all ages.

For a child's book, it kept this adult engaged and intrigued throughout. Great read-aloud for classroom or home. May benefit from reading Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes first, but the book stands alone as well. Beautifully written, but never takes itself too seriously. Great to read this young, Canadian author who is making a unique niche for himself.

The books-about-books subgenre sometimes feels a little overstuffed, but this is a worthy contribution to that tradition. It's technically a sequel, but I lost interest in the first book in the series and didn't finish it and still had no trouble with this one, so it works fine as a standalone -- which is great, because I really liked this book. It's full of vividly drawn, diverse characters, and the world is very detailed and full of creative touches that I loved. If you like Cornelia Funke's Inkheart, or really kids' fantasy in general, this book is well worth reading.
