This dark and thrilling adventure, with an unforgettable heroine, will captivate fans of steampunk, fantasy, and romance. On her 18th birthday, Lena Mattacascar decides to search for her father, who disappeared into the northern wilderness of Scree when Lena was young. Scree is inhabited by Peculiars, people whose unusual characteristics make them unacceptable to modern society. Lena wonders if her father is the source of her own extraordinary characteristics and if she, too, is Peculiar. On the train she meets a young librarian, Jimson Quiggley, who is traveling to a town on the edge of Scree to work in the home and library of the inventor Mr. Beasley. The train is stopped by men being chased by the handsome young marshal Thomas Saltre. When Saltre learns who Lena's father is, he convinces her to spy on Mr. Beasley and the strange folk who disappear into his home, Zephyr House. A daring escape in an aerocopter leads Lena into the wilds of Scree to confront her deepest fears.

The cover art and the fantastic reviews on the book cover had me expecting more. At best, it's a reasonably entertaining read but not a page turner. I found the characters and plot could use some more depth, and the gothic steam-punk description/setting somehow "peculiarly" lacking (haha, I'm so funny...).

I really loved this book! Lena is sweet and selfless and her friends are great, I really can't explain much about it- but it's definitely worth the read- I read The Peculiars at the same time as reading the Infernal Devices series and I found them oddly similar, both are great reads though! You'll find yourself caught up in this tale of mystery, adventure, and a bit of light romance! :) Enjoy!

I just could not get into this story at all. The characters were not very interesting (especially the main character, I wish she had more of a personality) and I wasn't a huge fan of the writing style, so the plot (though semi-interesting) didn't hold my attention.
