Award-winning photographer Mark Nixon has created a trove of quirky and nostalgic portraits of teddy bears and other stuffed animals that have been lovingly abused after years of play. MuchLoved collects 60 of these images along with their accompanying background tales. An exhibit in the photographer's studio led to a small sensation on the Internet when a few of the pictures circulated unofficially on scores of blogs and on many legitimate news sites. Viewers have been intrigued by the funny, bittersweet images and their ironic juxtaposition of childhood innocence and aged, loving wear and tear. When you see these teddy bears and bunnies with missing noses and undone stuffing, you can't help but think back to childhood and its earliest companions who asked for nothing and gave a lot back.

This book documents the history of one of the iconic symbols of childhood: the teddy bear/beloved stuffed animal. A sweet collection of photographs highlights beloved toys from Europe, along with short vignettes written by their owners. Turning each page and seeing how worn and torn the toys had become reminded me of this quote from Margery Williams Bianco's "The Velveteen Rabbit:" "Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand." Accordingly, "Much Loved" is indeed for those who understand how very Real a stuffed childhood companion can be.

Much Loved by Irish photographer Mark Nixon is a visual essay of stuffed animals- stuffed with love I think. While these stuffies; bears, dogs and giraffes among them, were no doubt adorable once upon a time, now they could put fear into the heart of a young child. What makes one stuffie so loved while another finds itself under shoes in the closet?
Prepare for a giggle and maybe a little heart ache.

Snapshot short stories deliver a very human rich mix of sorrow, delight, distance and enduring Love.

A charming look at how our childhood teddy bears demonstrate the depth of pure love and devotion. A lovely quick read.
