In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy antisemitism. For one boy growing up in Newark, Lindbergh's election is the first in a series of ruptures that threaten to destroy his small, safe corner of America-and with it, his mother, his father, and his older brother.

In this alternative history novel, ardent Nazi sympathizer Charles A. Lindbergh defeats Franklin Roosevelt in the presidential election of 1940. He then establishes what he calls a "cordial agreement with Adolf Hitler" to keep America out of the war and not to interfere with Nazi Germany's designs for the rest of the world. This announcement injects fear into the Jewish population of America and into one family in particular, causing them to wonder if they themselves will be inescapably persecuted in their own country that has up to now been committed to freedom.

The reader may feel distinct echoes of 9/11 as Philip Roth tackles the emotion of fear in this novel; he explores the uncertainty with which one views the world when the rug of peaceful reality has been yanked out from under their feet. He also examines the question of how far racism could go in America, if left unchecked.

The audiobook is read by actor Ron Silver, who terrifically breathes life into the thoughts and emotions of all the characters.
