"He wasn't always a believer. In the spring of 1979, seventeen-year-old Fox Mulder has bigger problems than applying for college. Five years ago his little sister disappeared from their home and was never heard from again. Mulder blames himself, and his mother blames his father, who has retreated into his top-secret work for the State Department. In Fox's senior year, his dad has moved him to WAshington, DC--away from his friends on Martha's Vineyard. While Mulder doesn't mind the fresh start and not being known as 'that kid with the missing sister,' he's still obsessed with finding Samantha. So when a local boy turns up dead and another child is abducted, Mulder can't stop himself from getting involved. Could there be a link to his sister's case? As he uncovers the truth, Mulder and his friends find themselves on the trail of a serial killer. Sucked into a world where conspiracies, the occult, and madness overlap, Fox Mulder starts to believe."--

By all technical standpoints, it's probably a three star read, where the characters are stock and the chain of events fairly predictable (tho one could argue that it just plays out the same way an episode would play out, and thus be forgiven for following the same tropes and pacing). And yet, it's FUN. It felt like Stranger Things, or an early episode of Supernatural, maybe even the better parts of Scooby Doo. The joy is in uncovering the monster mystery, going to weird locations, talking to weirder people, doing extensive research in a library with piles of textbooks, trying to convince an uninterested police that the teens know what's up, facing the Big Bad and doing some good, all covered in the glittery detritus of the era it takes place in.

A juvenile book for teenagers. Alas, I am not one of them. So, for me, I have not been very impressed. But still, I read it. I wouldn't wish to be a teenager again...

A predictable plot and one dimensional characters make this a less-than-exciting read, even for an X-Files fan like me.

Super easy fast read! The author really captured the character of Mulder well in the book.
