Belinda Bauer is a phenomenal voice in British crime fiction, whose work has won the CWA's Gold Dagger Award for Crime Novel of the Year and garnered rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. Rubbernecker is a gripping thriller about a medical student who begins to suspect that something strange is going on in this cadaver lab. 'The dead can't speak to us,' Professor Madoc had said. But that was a lie. The body Patrick Fort is examining in anatomy class is trying to tell him all kinds of things. But no one hears what he does, and no one understand when he tries to tell them. Life is already strange enough for Patrick-being a medical student with Asperger's Syndrome doesn't come without its challenges. And that's before he is faced with solving a possible murder, especially when no one believes a crime has even taken place. Now he must stay out of danger long enough to unravel the mystery. But as Patrick learns one truth from a dead man, he discovers there have been many other lies closer to home. A can't-put-it-down page-turner from one of the finest voices in UK crime, Rubbernecker puts Belinda Bauer firmly on the map of world-class crime writers.

I tried and made it to Chapter 10, then closed it for good. Just couldn't get into the story at all.

This is another eye-opening story about someone with Asperger's Syndrome. I agree with mwofsey's comments: Patrick is a well-rounded figure. He's got Asperger's, but he's also just another human being, wondering why his father had to die when he was young and what happened to him when he died. As he tries to catch the moment between life and death by watching horse races, he also enrolls in an anatomy class at college. No, he doesn't want to be a doctor, just wants to figure this whole death thing out. Patrick learns about why some people kill and he learns about himself.

What a wonderful book! I read the ARC and I was hooked. I'm now reading everything that Belinda Bauer has written (just finished Blacklands and it did not disappoint!).

People who enjoyed The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night by Mark Haddon (as I did) will find Patrick interesting and well drawn. But the real payoff comes in the way all the strands are pulled together in the surprisingly moving ending, and we learn like Patrick why people are killed and why other people want them to die. Really, this is a very good book.

Absorbing story of Patrick, a young man with Asperger's who lost his father at an early age to a car accident. At the time, no one explained to him about death or where his father had gone. When he reaches college age he enters university as a student of anatomy (not a med student as the summary says) on a quest to find the answers. To his dismay there are no answers to be found as to what happens after death. However, he does discover a mystery when the cause of death for his group's cadaver does not seem correct. As he seeks to find the answers he gets into trouble and begins to learn more about relating to living humans, including his mother. Good book.

Fascinating main character, well thought-out story and twists and turns until the very end. REALLY good mystery.
