"After thirty years at St. Oswald's Grammar School, Latin master Roy Straitley has seen all kinds of boys come and go. Each class has its own clowns, rebels, and underdogs--all who hold a special place in the old teacher's heart. But for all the diamonds in the rough that Straitley has polished, there is one boy who continues to haunt his dreams even twenty years later. As insolvency and academic failure threaten the very foundations of St. Oswald's, a new headmaster steps in to save the venerable school--bringing with him modern technology, sharp suits, and even girls. While Straitley does his sardonic best to resist this leap into the future, a shadow from his past begins to stir once more. The headmaster's arrival awakens memories of a decades-old scandal that once rocked the dusty corridors of St. Oswald's, and with it the boy who started it all. A boy capable of terrible things."--

Absolutely the best Joanne Harris, along with Gentlemen and Players!

Roy Straitley is a Latin teacher in a boarding school for boys. He is an anachronism. And the new, forward-thinking headmaster thinks it’s past time for him to retire, and is ready to force the issue.

Other Class was a satisfying read, on all levels, its dark backdrop notwithstanding.

My reading experience would have been even better had I 1) read it after its predecessor, Gentlemen and Players, and 2) studied Virgil in the original Latin (studied anything in the original Latin...).

But the Latin puns and Master Straitley’s old school humor were not entirely lost on me, thanks to Google translate. "Obesa cantavit"?!

The plotting is intricate—a puzzle that requires patience and a bit of re-reading as new information is shared.

Joanne Harris is a crafty craftswoman.

Not quite a traditional mystery, not quite a psychological thriller, but a mixture of both. Set in a British boys' boarding school in 2005, we follow aging Latin professor Roy Straitley as a scandal from 1981 reemerges after it was thought buried. Suspenseful yet leisurely, this one delights.
