Alone on a small Missouri farm after a thirty-year marriage, Sue Hubbell found a new love-of the winged, buzzing variety. Left with little but the commercial beekeeping and honey-producing business she started with her husband, Hubbell found solace in the natural world. Then she began to write, challenging herself to tell the absolute truth about her life and the things she cared about. Describing the ups and downs of beekeeping from one springtime to the next, A Country Year transports readers to a different, simpler place. In a series of exquisite vignettes, Hubbell reveals the joys of a life attuned to nature in this heartfelt memoir about life on the land, and of a woman finding her way in middle age.

What’s with the summary here. This had nothing what to do with this book!

Simple words with huge meaning. The tone of the book is a laid back casual conversations about observing nature. The underlining truth is the story is about a middle age woman who discovers a place in the world where she can be free to be who she wants to be. She is divorced and runs a small business as a beekeeper in the Ozarks. The simple way she examines the insects, wild animals and even human nature takes on the quality of a deep thinker. You become lost in her thoughts of why things happen they way they do. She questions the termites that come up through the floor boards to her neighbor across the river with his turkey call. If you want to read about how life really is in the Ozarks then you will not be disappointed. I too love the Ozarks and feel for those city-dwellers who want "simple-lives". But as Hubbell points out "life is as complicated as the person living it."
