I agree with the comment that this story would have been better served as a mini-series. I had just finished reading the book, so a lot of what might have been confusing as they tried to abbreviate the story for the movie was very clear. But I watched with someone who had not read the book, and he was often lost. Overall, I thought the movie followed the book as closely as it could, but some details had to be eliminated in the interest of time. The performances were great by all the actors, and watching the special features really enhanced details behind the story.

Great cast, but nothing too special in terms of direction or story. It definitely wants to be "Gone Girl", but never comes all that close.

My guess would be that too many book cooks ruined the film in the kitchen. This is a thriller novel so Im not sure that this book could ever be a movie that works. I am glad that I watched the movie instead of reading the book.

Really didn't like the book, and didn't realize this was the movie made from it (wasn't even thinking about that book), until about 30 seconds after I put the DVD in. Maybe it's not fair to give it the rating I did, without watching much of it, but it started going the same way fast (maybe worse), and I just ejected it. The book got VERY STUPID toward the end, & went downhill from there. The movie seemed to start out that way, and again, I admit, I also just didn't like the way it was written, including the premise.

I for one am tired of the same old predictable type of suspense stories, so this was refreshing! I loved the twists and turns, the darkness, and the way this story unfolded like layers of an onion being pulled away. I like movies that make me think, question what's going to happen, and fill in some of the blanks. I didn't read the book but now I'm going to! What's the point in posting a review when you didn't watch until the end of the movie? If you didn't see the end, you missed the best part! I loved it.

The commentators below are right. This is a woeful thriller unredeemed by anything -- acting, screenplay, cinematography, score. What makes this film particularly painful is all the characters are thoroughly unlikable, with the possible exception of the psychotherapist. But we can expect more of the same dreck from Universal. GIRL ON THE TRAIN cost $45 million to make and grossed nearly four times that at the box office.

Really terrible plot and awful characterization. Was hoping the movie would be more suspenseful than the book, but the storyline just wasn't my taste. Main character's behavior was pathetic. Stopped watching after 10 minutes. I couldn't stand the book either and didn't waste my time on more than a chapter.

For all that didn't like the film I have one recommendation, READ the BOOK. It is a excellent story, well written and holds on to you until the end.

Considering the hype, it was a huge disappointment. Story is full of holes. The disjointed characters don't even seem to belong to the same movie. Emily Blunt's acting was perhaps the only positive, assuming you are prepared to endure the eternally gloomy and self-loathing appearance that lasts right through the movie.

It was too painful watching talented Emily Blunt as an alcoholic loser, and we stopped watching after 30 minutes. Repetitive train sequences and disjointed backflashes failed to move the story forward toward its presumably dark and unhappy destination. Rotten Tomatoes review site accurately says, "Emily Blunt's outstanding performance isn't enough to keep The Girl on the Train from sliding sluggishly into exploitative melodrama".
