I love this book, it shows all the conflicts that may happen with someone when their parents are two different races. Also more importantly, the imaginary friend reminds me of a demon, such a cool character. We don't know exactly where she comes from, which is cool. I love how instead of tempting Jess to do things she's wanted to do, she instead asks her repeatedly, "Why are you good when people are cruel to you? How do you benefit from that? Are you doing good just because that's how you were raised and what you were told to do?". This moral dilemma is lovely to see in books! It was a haunting spooky and wonderful book.

I love this book. I found so much of my childhood self in Jessamy, and grew through this character's pain. The ending is ambiguous, but I'm starting to suspect that is much of Oyeyemi's point, with magical realism and magical thinking being expertly wielded by the author. The world of "reality," with it's demand for neat little endings and easily digestible characters is easily cast aside. This author is truly gifted.
