Durham-ite John Darnielle's writing for his musical project, The Mountain Goats, has always been unique and riveting; his prose is no different. Storytelling comes second-nature to him, as many of his songs follow narratives, a skill that he has strengthened over time as evidenced by this outstanding piece of fiction. The audiobook is a MUST-listen, as his engaging voice not only immerses you into the troubled protagonist's unsteady state-of-mind, but also lulls you into the dreamlike setting of the interjections highlighting the role-playing game scenarios. Key points and transitions are backed by unobtrusive, original musical compositions that enhance the narrative and reaffirm the haunted tone. And what about the story? I don't want to say much about the story, but this dark piece of realistic fiction involves a protagonist whose mail-away role playing game delivers some unimaginable unintended consequences.
