One of the major subplots in Lady Bird - a movie that is nothing but subplots - is the cliche story in which a teenage girl sacrifices an established friendship in pursuit of popularity, only to ultimately realize her mistake. Incredibly, this is one of the few things in the film that feel lazy or inauthentic. The result is a coming-of-age story that is genuinely heartfelt, genuinely affecting, and genuinely surprising.
