Truly loved this book. All of Henry's books are great, but because I have a sister who I love very much I think this book may be my favorite because at the heart of it this book is about sister. Nora and Libby are the "Book Lovers," the title refers to and sisters whose love for each other is reminiscent of Elizabeth & Jane if you're an Austenite.Truly loved this book. There seems to be a niche audience for cooking show romances, because I have been reading a bunch of them without trying, and I am so glad to have read a queer-tastic version finally! Both main characters are passionate home cooks who get selected for "Chef's Special," a cooking show competing for ratings amongst lots of other cooking shows. I appreciate that the author didn't shy away from the underbelly of tokenism on reality television without letting cynicism get in the way of a lovely romantic comedy. I want everyone who loves romance books to read this one, because reading the pronoun "they" for 350 pages gently forces you to realize it's not a big deal. It works just like "he" or "she." I promise. This is definitely an opposites attract romance and I encourage anyone who likes "Love and Other Disasters," to read the author's novellas (which I slightly prefer even though they are shorter books).

This book got so much hype, I put it at the top of my pile for 2022. I'm really glad I did, it's worth the hype. However, the hype doesn't really give this book it's full due, because it glosses over the deeper themes. This book is NOT just a romance. It has a very self-aware tone about the romance, but also has a very real dark moment of sexism in the academy, specifically for women in stem fields. Additionally, the author threads a very tricky needle with the theme of "the hypothesis." Yes, in science a hypothesis is the beginning of all experiments, and this book is about scientists. However, the concept of a hypothesis can be applied to all relationships, and that's what makes this book so so beautiful. You have to let the experiment run, even if you are certain about the outcome. Or, put another way, you have to give people in any relationship the freedom to react as they will. Lovely writing, excellent banter, and magic in the metaphor of the hypothesis applied to all life, not just lab science. I recommend this book to anyone with the below trigger warnings!

As many have already said, the history of the two romantic leads as individuals is very glossed over which makes this a very very light, short read. I get the feeling there will be more books set in this little Georgian town, and I will happily read them.As many have already said, the history of the two romantic leads as individuals is very glossed over which makes this a very very light, short read. As someone who has been in and out of therapy for a long time, learning about what therapy is like on the other side (the clinician/therapist side) made me appreciate the practice so much more. Therapy is an art and a science, and every single person benefits from therapy in a different way with a different relationship to their therapist. Some people respond to "tough love" while others respond to "gentle corrections" and the therapist has to figure that all out! I loved this book. As many other reviewers have written already, the pace of this book is slow. But, it was so helpful to me dealing with grief from the passing of a loved one. "Wintering" can last a season, like it does in nature, or it can be a few seasons. Thinking of my grief as a natural cycle has really helped me. The author's own "wintering" was started by burnout-- which I think most people can relate too as well. I learned a lot, and the slow pace forced me to sit with what I was learning than a quick binge read would have.As many other reviewers have written already, the pace of this book is slow. This is the best of the three currently in the series, and it has a bunch of satisfying tropes: fake dating, there's only one bed, grumpy & sunshine, single mom, and shared project. I think it has the most emotional resonance of any in the series; April is a prickly lady with walls up for understandable reasons, but self-sabotages when it comes to the hunky Mitch. This is a sweet "grumpy sunshine" romance with a neurodiverse lead. This is steamier than the "heart principle"! I wish that "little Esme" had been introduced to Khai sooner so we had time to see that relationship unfold.

As an adult reader, YA books can be boring but this wasn't at all. It was a little predictable which is why I gave it a lower rating. I loved learning about the Hindu mythology; it made me wish this author will write a book with the same stars for adults! This book does have some sadness; mother and daughters being separated always makes me teary eyed. I wish we had learned more about the world and culture of the stars, but perhaps there will be more books to come. Some of the reviews I have seen of this book penalize it for the use of non-English words, but I think that is a strength. I did look up a lot of vocabulary because I do not speak/read Hindi, but that added to my experience reading. To spoon-feed the reader everything would have defeated the purpose of using the second language, the primary language of the culture being described. As an adult reader, YA books can be boring but this wasn't at all. The novellas in this series are perfect short stories. They are all like the "meet cute" portion of a full romance novel. Diverse character ensemble and sweet banter. I would give this a 3.75 out of 5 stars. I had a book hangover from "A Shadow in the Ember" and thought I would give this series a try because it has all been finished as of 2021. This is a YA book, but as an adult reader I still enjoyed it. The secret world of angels, demons, and demon slayers alongside our own world was very neat-- I can't wait to read the rest of the series to see how the mysteries continue to be revealed. My favorite part of the book was the ghost sidekick-- Armentrout always has scene stealing secondary characters. I would recommend this book for adult fantasy readers who don't mind the lighter nature of YA works. The heroine is scrappy, loyal, and suffering from a degenerative eye disease which adds different kinds of challenges on top of the demonic kind. I didn't give this book the 4th star because it does occasionally "TELL" instead of showing us (not uncommon in YA lit).
Tropes: there's only one bed, banter, fate versus choice, plot twist, and scary dad

There was a lot of hype for this book! The publishing machine really got behind this title. It wasn't quite clear from the marketing if this was a YA book or not, but I read YA all the time and didn't care. I do think it is YA; the character development of the main character is very rooted in teen angst (learning the hard way that our friends DO have our best interests at heart). The main character's bloom into power was overly rushed-- and the "witch haven" in the title never really materialized. It made me even feel that the book was mistitled (which is pretty dissonant as a reader!). There is a loose end for a sequel, I will read it but with much lowered expectations.

I know that review readers hate reading "The first book was better," but it's true in this case. The pacing of this book was way way too fast. We get some nicely written characters and some rushed new characters. I had heard this was going to be a trilogy but it seemed that everything was tied up. I would like to see this author write for an adult audience because the premise is good and the characters have strong outlines. This is one of my few five star reads. Not only is it a queer romance, it's a queer "fall in love with a prince" romance. The style the author writes in is quippy, banter-y, and fully immersive. This is an enemies to lovers with secondary characters that are fully realized too. Fans of "Conventionally Yours" will love this one because the world is BIG-- we go from London, to Texas, to Washington D.C. I love a romance that is confident enough in it's characters to take them out of "the one little town" or the "road trip" tropes. I recommend this to everyone who is interested in dipping their toe's in romance books and will definitely set a high bar for you within the genre. This is one of my few five star reads.
